Nappies galore
Like any logical consumer we looked into our options for items that we bought for Baby. One of the first things we looked into was nappies. We were concerned about the number of disposable nappies that a baby could get through in the period when it would require the use of nappies- hardly environmentally friendly. We looked into reusable nappies and although we were attracted to the idea we decided against them in the end bacause of the cost and inconvenience. There is a signfiicant investment to be made intially in the purchase of the reusable nappies and then in the purchase of disposable inserts which take up the worst of the solid waste and can be flushed down the toilet. The reusable nappies can be washed first by hand and then in the washing machine, or sent for washing by a hospital grade nappy washing service; the former was too much effort for working parents and the latter involved a significant cost and was not that convenient to use. We found the Real Nappies for London website very useful for information on anything to do with reusable nappies and I would recommend visiting this site if you are considering reusable nappies for your baby.
We then looked into using more environmentally friendly nappies- those which are at least partially biodegradable. We bought some and tested them in terms of water absorption and eventually decided on using Nature Babycare nappies. We have been using these with Baby in the past month and have been very satisfied with the performance. They are readily available at the local Waitrose but I have also been ordering them via OneClickPharmacy on Amazon; the latter is particularly good because the nappies are delivered to our door at regular intervals so babies need not suffer because of forgetful mummies.
One other changing accessory that we are very satisfied with is the Sangenic nappy disposal system- no smells, easy to use and relatively inexpensive as the cartridges do go a long way- we got through one cartridge in a little over two weeks. For the protection of Baby's bottom, we chose Metanium nappy rash cream and Neal's Yard baby barrier cream. We've only used the latter so far but, judging from the consistency of both, a little goes a long way for these.
Nappy changing has not been as gross as I thought it would be. However, Baby's bowel productions are bound to change over time and with diet so I think the worst is still to come.
